I help design teams deliver world class products.

I offer design and leadership services to all sized organisations to enhance their product offerings and design capabilities. I specialize in providing comprehensive support and coverage across various areas, including product design, UX & UI, research, and design operations.

Moreover, I excel in guiding the seamless integration of these design disciplines into product development and engineering methodologies, such as agile, SAFE, Kanban, waterfall, and more. With my expertise, your organization can effectively ramp up its design capabilities while ensuring alignment with efficient and proven methodologies.

Whether its a few days a week or a few hours a month, let me know how I can help you.

3 Steps to Product Design. Check out these case studies.

1 – Consider a holistic solution. Applying Skeuomorphism to replicate physical microbiology tools and processes.

As hospital and medical centre labs grow and scale an increasing array of products and instruments are physically and digitally integrated into the smart lab digital solutions.
The primary goal of this piece of work was to integrate the microbiological workflow of physically spotting organisms on to a MALDI plate in order to be tested at an instrument, into BD Synapsys lab solution.

2 – Solve discreet problems. Utilise Design to overcome challenges in the backend

Database calls and API’s made via the Emirates Airline native mobile apps were notoriously slow. The backend team had a considerable backlog of optimisation and could not immediately address this concern. Product owners approached UX to see could the experience of the trip retrieval be enhanced given such technical constraints.

3 – Build with strong foundations. Combining multiple libraries, tools and repositories into a single design system.

The process of updating medical software, maintaining FDA compliance, is difficult and leads to legacy software in the field that rarely gets updated.
Due in part to this, Synapsys (and BD in General) has many different styles and systems governing its design which sometimes contradict or conflate; e.g. colours, modals, tables and various widgets. An effort was made to articulate these into a unifying system.

Who is Robin?

Foremost I am an adventurous and empathetic husband and father. My passions are the ocean, travelling and martial art. Apart from my family, some interesting things I’ve done include freediving with Sharks off oil rigs and overlanding through the vast, remote deserts of the Middle East.

Professionally speaking I am an avid problem finder, expert at design research and workshop facilitation, in particular, Design Sprints. I craft smart and elegant solutions utilising a broad range of UX and UI skillsets to deliver amazing experiences and exceed business goals. I love to mentor, develop and help accelerate designers throughout their career.

My Publications

During my academic research I began to write and thoroughly enjoyed it. My academic publications have appeared in Journals and Conference proceedings in the areas of Cognitive Science, Computing, HCI and Pedagogy. In the Middle East I explored some travel photography, videography and journaling. Most recently I have spent some time writing a book for designers dealing with stakeholders.

The Art of Design
2022

Took some time out, post pandemic, to recharge and focus on indulge this book which I first thought about several years ago.
This book is about how designers can interact and manage stakeholders. It is a parodical novella that considers the book Sun Tzu (renowned author of “The Art of War”) would write if he was born in the 1990’s and and became a designer, instead of warrior.
